A Message from our CEO & Board Chair

At Prevent Child Abuse America, we recognize that parenting is challenging even during the best of times, and the COVID-19 outbreak we are currently experiencing as we reflect on 2019 has shifted our world radically and rapidly into a place of great uncertainty. Circumstances that increase parental stress and anxiety—loss of income, food and housing instability, social disconnection, and limited or nonexistent access to quality healthcare—are intense and acute. What’s more, not all children and families are experiencing the pandemic in the same way; these stressors disproportionately impact under-resourced communities and people of color.

In large part because of our many accomplishments in 2019, Prevent Child Abuse America is working throughout the COVID-19 crisis to ensure the safe, stable, and nurturing relationships and environments that help children succeed and communities thrive. New leadership in 2019, combined with the efforts of our previous President & CEO, Dan Duffy, who served our organization with commitment and passion, delivered numerous noteworthy accomplishments last year. Among them are the successful re-chartering of ten state chapters and 26 newly instated Healthy Families America (HFA) affiliates nationwide, inaugural chapter research grant and government affairs initiatives, a new report on the importance of preventing adverse childhood experiences, and nearly 1,000 child wellness advocates and professionals convening in September at our national conference, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. What follows in this report is an elaboration of these achievements and others, which, collectively, help to lay the foundation for our vision: a world where all children grow up happy, healthy, and prepared to succeed in supportive families and communities.

In 2022 Prevent Child Abuse America will celebrate its 50th anniversary, marking a half century as a vanguard in preventing the abuse and neglect of our nation’s children. We cannot imagine a more meaningful cause, and we are proud to serve as its Board Chair and President & CEO, respectively. We would also like to express our deep gratitude to our dedicated Board members and staff in Chicago and across the country who work diligently day in and day out on behalf of children and families—they are truly an impetus for positive change in the world. And, finally, we wish to thank all our exceptional partners—our state chapters and HFA affiliates, generous funders, legislators and policy makers, and mission-aligned collaborators—who make this work possible. You have enabled us to serve and create brighter futures for millions of children for nearly 50 years, and with your continued support we will do so for another 50 and beyond.

Together, we can prevent child abuse, America—because childhood lasts a lifetime.

HFA by the Numbers

Healthy Families America (HFA) is one of the most widely implemented evidence-based home visiting models across the US and the signature family support program of Prevent Child Abuse America. By supporting parents in the home, HFA helps to build the foundation for healthy development; early, nurturing relationships between caregiver and child maximizes opportunities for children to reach their full potential. Following voluntary enrollment in HFA, families work one-on-one with a family support specialist and receive services tailored to their specific needs. Parents can enroll in the program starting prenatally or at birth, and receive support up until the child is five years old.

Chapter Network by the Numbers

At Prevent Child Abuse America (PCA America), we are able to extend our reach and impact through our extensive nationwide network, consisting of chapters in 47 states and Washington, DC, with plans underway to expand to all 50 states. PCA America chapters range from independent nonprofit organizations to entities operating under umbrella institutions such as government agencies, hospitals, and universities. Our chapters enable children and families to thrive through programs such as child sexual abuse and bullying prevention; home visiting and parent self-help education; and other family support services that give parents, caregivers, and communities the tools they need to establish strong foundations for healthy child development.
